DIY Turf Install, Corona California
Chris Casey of Corona California started his spring “as usual” preparation of getting his front lawn up to speed with weed removal, dethatching and sprinkler repair by a trip to the local home megalopolis supply store. As he made his trek trying to remember all of the sprinkler parts, fertilizer & other weed removal weapons to amass, he drove by a large synthetic turf installation at a new private school located on Fullerton & Ontario in the City of Corona.
Amazed at the expanse of green lush looking grass that was synthetic turf, and the general preparation, brought thoughts of…”I could do that,” so Casey began his synthetic turf DIY project. So almost instantly, abandoning his Home Depoe trip, he talked to the installation group installing the synthetic field about his yard and how much work it would take to install his own Ameriturf synthetic grass lawn.
All be it, that Mr. Casey was a handy person and did much of his own home repair projects, he knew instantly this was going to be a bit of a challenge, but would save him money in the long-run if not that summer alone in water bills that exceeded over $275.00 per month. That afternoon Mr. Casey rented a sod cutter and had taken up his front yard grass. The very next day he began capping his sprinklers and making preparations for the yard to receive the synthetic turf.
He then prepped the surface with a decomposed base and leveling the area and then compacting the decomposed granite. He then hired the install crew from the field project to install the 800’ area of synthetic turf.
After the crew reviewed the work Casey had done, and made some grade changes, they installed an Ameriturf Systems Rye 65 synthetic turf, which emulates real grass down to the root zone and even multiple colored synthetic grass blades. Mr. Casey realized the installation portion definitely took some talent, but understood it was “experienced” techniques and a quality synthetic grass that make a good installation as opposed to a bad installation, which there are plenty of bad installs in Corona.
Local landscape crews understand base preparation, but not how to install synthetic turf properly. These pictures show what “not” to do when it comes to synthetic turf installation and how to avoid simple and obvious mistakes. Overall, Mr. Casey’s yard is top notch, maintenance free, and this spring Casey is going to take a long overdue weekend trip with his kids and enjoy Mammoth Mountain Spring skiing, while knowing his new synthetic grass yard is “not” going to need any work.
